6 to 5 blackjack
The standard payout to a player, when he or she is dealt 21 right off the bat is 3 to 2. This means that you will win 30 dollars on a 20 dollar bet if you are dealt 21. Unfortunately many online casinos have begun to implement 6 to 5 blackjack, which means you would only win 24 dollars on a 20 dollar bet.
This may not seem like a big deal, after all, you are only going to be dealt 21 a little over 4 percent of the time, right? Wrong, 6 to 5 blackjack instead of 3 to 2 blackjack makes a monumental difference. Any experienced blackjack player knows that the house edge in blackjack is very low if you play correctly, roughly half of one percent, 6 to 5 blackjack raises the house edge 1.4% over time, which means the house edge would bet nearly 2% if you do everything perfectly.
Playing just a few hands of 6 to 5 blackjack at a casino will make a negligible difference at best, but over time, the increase in house edge from 0.5% to 2% is huge. After playing 100 - 200 hands the 1.4% difference will compound hand after hand and will effectively end any chance you had of doing well against the house over time.
If you bet 20 dollars every hand and hit 21 four times out of one hundred hands, which is the statistical average, you are losing out on 24 dollars every one hundred hands, which is more than one unit.
You cannot force a casino to change their rules, it is what it is. Thankfully the majority of casinos still offer 3 to 2 blackjack, which means you only option is to simply ignore the casinos online and in real life that only offer 6 to 5 blackjack. The more players who boycott their casino, the better the chance that the casino will change its ways.
6 to 5 blackjack is more common within actual casinos rather than online casinos, but it is a big deal either way. Most online casinos offer 3 to 2 blackjack for two reasons, the first is that they have less overhead, they do not have to pay rent, electrical costs, or nearly as much for labor as actual casinos. The second reason is that there are simply too many options and too much information for online casinos to get away with this. All a player has to do is click a button to stop playing at an online casino, it is not quite as easy for players in landbased casinos.
Please do everything you can to discourage casinos in Vegas and everywhere else from offering 6 to 5 blackjack. Talk to people at the casinos, refuse to give the casino's business, warn your family and friends about this policy, it simply is not fair to the player, especially when he/she is naturally at a disadvantage to start with. Greed is at an all time high from casino's.
