basic tips & tactics for online blackjack
Basic blackjack strategy is not too hard to grasp. Do not do anything stupid, follow a blackjack strategy card to a tee, hope for the best! However, playing online can pose additional challenges.
First of all, you are playing on your computer, if you are like me, you are a multi-tasker. You might watch TV while on the internet or have 6-8 tabs open at a time. Simply put, it is very easy to lose concentration while playing online. If you want to have a chance against the house, you will have devote all of your attention to the game. The house edge in blackjack is roughly 0.5% if you play with proper strategy, which is very reasonable, but most players experience a 2 - 3% house edge because they make poor decisions. You will need to cut off the television and exit facebook while you are playing, I know it is hard, but it is your only chance.
Playing blackjack online is completely different than playing in a casino. More than once I have accidently clicked stand instead of hit, or hit instead of double down. This is not common, but if you play long enough, you run the risk of hitting the wrong button. This is a preventable error to say the least. An actual casino is going to shower you with comps if it appears that you are about to play with pretty high stakes, you are obviously not going to get this at an online casino.
One of the main reasons I prefer playing blackjack online rather than in an actual casino is that most online casino's still offer 3 to 2 blackjack while 6 to 5 blackjack dominates actual casino's these days. There is something to be said for a house edge of 0.5% compared to a house edge of nearly 2%. Actual casinos simply do not give you a chance to do well in the long run by offering 6 to 5 blackjack.
The bottom line is that you cannot change the way that you play blackjack just because you are playing online. You should not follow any silly strategies you hear about like Mimic the dealer or never bust blackjack. You should not stand on 12's or hit on 17's. Follow a blackjack strategy card, double down when you can, split when it is advantageous to do so. There are tons of legitimate online resources available to you for free. Dozens of great websites as well as different free softares that can improve your game.
No casino is going to give you a redo, they want you to make poor decisions, they want you to play with bad strategies, they want their money, it is your responsibility to do everything in your power to play the right way. Blackjack is a lot of fun when you do it right. Play with money that you can afford to lose, play with correct strategies to give yourself a chance, and most importantly, keep everything in perspective.
