Red Dog Poker Strategy, Odds & Tips

tips, strategy and odds for red dog poker

Red Dog TipsThe greatest and most important strategy when playing Red Dog Poker is gaining understanding about the payout structure if you win. A three card match will pay out at 11 to 1 (ex. Three, Four, and Five) and no other bets are allowed to increase the win, as it all boils down to how much you initially put down before the deal. A spread on the other hand, will allow you to increase the bet. For example, a one card spread will pay out five to one, a two card spread will payout four to one, three card spread pays two to one, and any spread with four or greater will pay one to one. Always keep in mind, that once you place a bet, no other bets are needed. This is one of my main online casino games. Below you will find a the Red Dog poker rules article I wrote for players that are not 100% sure how it is played online.

Usually, many casinos will use up to seven fifty two card decks for the game of Red Dog. Why so many cards? Using seven decks (sometimes less) is the casino's way of preventing players from counting cards. However, this is to your advantage, too - the more decks of cards that are being used, the greater the chance of getting the card that you need for your hand. For a single fifty two card deck, the risk is at 2.74% and the house is at an advantage of 3.13%.

Red Dog is different from other poker games because it is a combination of chance and math. The player can base their prediction on a mathematical outcome, and in the long run, it will pay off; however, during the short run, chance plays a bigger factor. Never trust your gut or instinct when you play. How can you possibly know that you should bet on a one card spread without factoring in mathematics? It is like comparing apples to oranges. If you want to remain a serious player, drop the "instinct" feeling and use your head. On the other hand, if you want to have fun and don't care about your losses, by all means, use your gut—you never know, Lady Luck may be on your side!

General Tips

One great tip to keep in mind while playing Red Dog is to understand that it will take some time to get used to the game because the structure of betting is completely different from other poker games. Become well-versed in the rules of the game and bet timidly until you are certain that you have the rules "down pat". The other tip that new players need to apply to their Red Dog play is that not every hand is a winner; don't become discouraged if you lose a few – keep on playing. While it may be pertinent to allow yourself a budget to play on, remember that if you lose money at any game of chance – the only way to get it back is to rethink your strategy and keep playing. If you throw in the towel early, the house wins the money and you'll never see it again.
